IP can be categorized under four sections – patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. A patent, copyright or trademark is a distinctive word used for identifying the source of a product and distinguishing a manufacturer’s products from those of another.

IP+Patents field is considered to be a very large field covering Biologists, Chemists, Engineers, Computer Scientists, and many other science /technology professionals.

The figures of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) show that of the total 1.56-lakh applications for international patents it received, the U.S. was topped the list with 52,280, followed by Japan with 27,731, whilst India’s applications amounted to 686. The total number of patent filings by Indian residents is three per million population, against a world average of 250.

You can become a Patent Agent. Besides this, employment opportunities are available in writing and prosecuting patent applications at law firms, technology transfer offices, biotech or engineering corporations, and government institutes.

Experts having a thorough knowledge of IP law, technical language, having good research capabilities and good writing skills have a very good opening in this field.
